Planning for Goodbye

If you have lost a pet, or are in the process of making the tough decision, grief is a usual feeling. Your pet is not “just a dog, or just a cat or just an animal” – they are a huge part of the family, and you should understand that it is normal to feel strong emotional feelings.

For many people the loss of a pet can hit as hard and even in some cases harder than the loss of a close relative. Sometimes the grief is even more intense over the loss of a pet than the loss of a relative and it is important to allow these feelings to run their course for you to grieve. We have to accept that the loss of a pet is substantial and distressing.

No matter how painful the decision is to have your pet euthanised, remember that over time the feelings will hurt less. It is important to let the memories of your pets life give you comfort and to remember that you gave them the best life possible with a loving home. It is also important to speak about your pet to friends and family, look at photos and their precious memory will always be kept alive.

If you are finding yourself in this difficult stage of plannning for goodbye and are in need of some help, please feel free to use our Planning for Goodbye checklist. At Donegal Pet Crematorium this checklist is intended to help you make the right decisions for you, your family and most importantly your pet.
